My deepest condolences. My name is Shawn Whalen. John gave me my start in the cooking business when I was 17 years old, back in 1981 at the Corkscrew Restaurant at Steeles and Woodbine. I have not spoken to John since 1990 when he gave his recommendation to the Federation of Chefs for me to write my Certified Chef de Cuisine Exam. Most recently I achieved the Certified Master Chef designation, and I am one of only five Master Chef's in Canada. I was looking to reach out to John and give thanks for all his support early in my career and found he had passed away. I am sad that I had not reached out sooner. He was a great mentor early on, and it was while I was working for John that I decided to continue a career in cuisine. Sincere condolences, Shawn

We both had the pleasure of working with John and have nothing but great memories of him. He always greeted everyone with a kind word and a big smile. I spent many hours on a golf course with John and he always spoke so positively about everyone close to him. Our condolences to John’s family and friends. We will both miss you very much John.

Dear Katie, we are so sorry for your loss. It has been some time since working with John but I can remember the great fun we had. He had the most awesome smile. Ellie, Simon, Kevin you most likely don't remember us but you should know that your dad was someone that you could confide in and trust to support you when needed. I wish we had done a better job staying in touch. He is definitely in our thoughts and prayers.

We had the good fortune of dealing with John thru Compass Group and the Toronto Zoo, truly a very friendly , caring and hard working indivual. I, Allan spoke to him on Tuesday and was shocked to receive a phone call about his passing. RIP John, our heart goes out to all of your family, friends and fellow employees.
